Так что GxE играет злую шутку не только с теми, кому достались "плохие" варианты "генов самоконтроля": если вы бедны, то хорошо развитые навыки противостоять искушениям хоть и помогут вырваться из нищеты, но, с высокой вероятностью, погубят здоровье и состарят вас раньше времени. Пока неясно, в какой степени можно переносить результаты, полученные на нищих афроамериканских подростках, на других людей. Но огромное множество других данных, приведенных в этой книге, показывают, насколько важно планировать жизнь так, чтобы реже усмирять лимбическую систему – т. е. стремиться избегать встречи с соблазнами, а не героически бороться с уже разгоревшимся желанием.
