He peered through a curtained door into a broad circular chamber, banded by a gallery half-way between the polished floor and the lofty ceiling. This chamber was furnished as if for a king. In the midst of it stood an ornate mahogany table, loaded with vessels of wine and rich viands. And Murilo stiffened. In a great chair whose broad back was toward him, he saw a figure whose habilments were familiar. He glimpsed an arm in a red sleeve resting on the arm of the chair; the head, clad in the familiar scarlet hood of the gown, was bent forward as if in meditation. Just so had Murilo seen Nabonidus sit a hundred times in the royal court.

Cursing the pounding of his own heart (проклиная громкие удары своего сердца; to pound — бить; колотиться, сильно биться /о сердце/), the young nobleman stole across the chamber, sword extended (молодой дворянин прокрался через комнату, выставив меч; to steal — красть; красться), his whole frame poised for the thrust (/при этом/ все его тело было готово к /колющему/ удару; to poise — удерживать в равновесии; приводить в готовность, быть готовым к действию; thrust — выпад, удар; укол, колющий удар). The length of a single stride separated Murilo from his enemy (расстояние в один /широкий/ шаг отделяло Мурило от его врага), when suddenly the man in the chair rose and faced him (когда вдруг человек в кресле поднялся и повернулся к нему лицом; to rise — поднялся; to face — встречаться; повернуть голову).

The blood went suddenly from Murilo's features (кровь внезапно отлила от лица Мурило; features — особенность; черты лица; части лица). His sword fell from his fingers and rang on the polished floor (его меч упал из его пальцев и зазвенел по полированному полу; to fall — падать; to ring — звенеть). A terrible cry broke from his livid lips (страшный крик вырвался из его посиневших губ; to break — ломать; прорываться; to break from one’s lips — сорваться с уст; livid — серовато-синий; мертвенно-бледный); it was followed by the thud of a falling body (за ним последовал глухой звук падающего тела). Then once more silence reigned over the house of the Red Priest (потом опять над домом Красного Жреца воцарилась тишина).
